Why a gender-specific program?

When women farmers flourish, everyone in the community benefits: the women themselves, their children in whom they invest, the communities that they feed, and the economies to which they contribute. With the right investments and guidelines, woman-run farms could produce a bumper crop of development.

Women also lack equal access to inputs, including fertilizer, better seeds, mechanical equipment, and agricultural extension services that would connect them with information about improved agricultural practices. This disparity is compounded by unequal access to the capital farmers need to purchase inputs.

In Northern Ghana, income and well-being are linked to agriculture. Farmers grow maize, yam, groundnuts, sorghum, rice and other crops for consumption. They also sell their produce to maintain food security and bring home an income.

Women are the pillars of every agricultural community, nonetheless, obstacles such as education and economic disadvantages prevent them from having access to various agricultural resources and opportunities. This inequity doesn’t just impact women and their children, it can have damaging consequences for rural economies as a whole.

By investing in rural women, we can also increase agricultural productivity in those communities, reduce poverty and hunger, and promote economic growth. Closing the gender gap would not only help women prosper, it would help their families and communities thrive.
